Jean-Marie Foubert (née en 1955)

Exceptionnelle coupe

This work is presented in I is another, Imaginal Japan [Orienting oneself, Act 4], fourth and last act of our online exhibition cycle Orienting oneself: a series on Japonisme and its lives

※ At first glance, this remarkable bowl calls to mind ancient Japanese Bizen stoneware, yet closer inspection reveals a significant departure from tradition. It adopts the Bizen method of wood-firing in a tunnel kiln, utilizing the process's marvelous effects to showcase the full beauty of the clay. There is no glaze; only the fire itself enhances the material. Depending on how the flames licked the piece, the clay takes on an infinite variety of brown hues, shifting toward gray, blue, and mauve. Drawing further inspiration from the Far East, the extraordinary Jean-Marie Foubert employs a shape reminiscent of the chawan(tea bowls) prized in the world of tea—a form that may surprise the Western eye. Through this reinterpretation, Foubert—arguably one of the most exceptional yet understated artisans of his generation—acts as a Western conduit for a specific way of perceiving and appreciating the beauty of clay, as well as the imaginative connections linking it to the cosmos. The decoration here is known as botamochi, a term borrowed from the culinary world. During firing, another pot placed in front of the piece shields the clay, creating a scarlet circle within the oxidized blue mass—an image that emerges like the sun breaking through the mist at dawn.
