※ Le principe de reprise n'est pas toujours guidé par un apprentissage ou par une volonté d'hommage, c'est aussi souvent un élément qui permet de tisser des liens et de se distancier d'un impératif. Une fois n'est pas coutume, ce pot n'est pas un exemple de japonisme mais plutôt un prolongement réactivant certaines influence orientales et anciennes chinoiseries vingtième siècle. Ce qui pour un œil peu entrainé ressemble à un vase miniature ou à pot à thé chinois est en réalité une traduction humoristique des contenants pour le thé en feuille de tradition chinoise. 
La très renommé et sérieuse fabrique L. Hjorth (issue de Lauritz Hjorth à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle) tente ici un exercice acrobatique : produire volontairement un vrai-faux pot à thé qui ne soit ni appropriation ni surplomb. En un numéro d'équilibriste le pari est réussi, ce pot s'il reprend l'éternel décor "à la chinoise" telle que toute la tradition occidentale l'a fait avec plus ou moins d'adresse depuis la découverte des "bleu et blanc" chinois au seizième siècle, opère néanmoins un passage au tamis de la tradition de grès danois de l'île de Bornholm.  Ici, on n'essaye nullement, comme ce fut le cas en Hollande au dix-septième siècle ou en Angleterre et en Allemagne au siècle suivant, de simuler la blancheur de la porcelaine qui a tant fait rêver l'Occident. Au contraire, le pot est en grès, rustique, épais, solide, gras et généreux, il ne joue sur ce registre et ne se prend pas du tout au sérieux. De même, son motif qu'au dix-huitième siècle on appelait sans sourciller  un décor " au chinois" est ici remis en jeu affranchi de son ridicule sérieux historique. Il est une caricature sans moquerie. Réduit au plus simple, à un symbole tenant ensemble un coloris et un tracé devenu archétype, il mute en objet paysan, brossé volontairement, dédramatisé dans cette surface blanche qui au contact de la terre de Bornholm devient d'un grège mordoré. J'adore ce petit pot, qui s'adresse à nous comme un clin d’œil complice. Il est un condensé d'une relecture vivante et inventive à partir d'une typologie surannée.

※ The principle of appropriation is not always driven by learning or a desire to pay homage; it is also often a way to forge connections and distance oneself from a perceived obligation. What, to the untrained eye, resembles a miniature vase or a Chinese teapot is in reality a humorous interpretation of traditional Chinese tea containers. The highly renowned and reputable L. Hjorth factory (founded by Lauritz Hjorth at the end of the nineteenth century) attempts an acrobatic feat here: deliberately producing a teapot that is both a true-to-life and a mockery, one that is neither an appropriation nor a mere imitation. In a balancing act, the gamble pays off. While this pot incorporates the timeless "Chinese-style" decoration, as the entire Western tradition has done with varying degrees of skill since the discovery of Chinese "blue and white" pottery in the sixteenth century, it nevertheless filters the influence of the Danish stoneware tradition from the island of Bornholm. Here, there is no attempt whatsoever, as was the case in Holland in the seventeenth century or in England and Germany in the following century, to simulate the whiteness of porcelain that so captivated the West. On the contrary, the pot is made of stoneware, rustic, thick, solid, rich, and generous; it doesn't play on this register and doesn't take itself seriously at all. Similarly, its motif, which in the eighteenth century was unabashedly called a "Chinese" decoration, is here reinterpreted, freed from its ridiculous historical seriousness. It is a caricature without mockery. Reduced to its simplest form, to a symbol combining a color and a design that has become an archetype, it transforms into a peasant object, deliberately brushed, de-dramatized in this white surface which, in contact with the Bornholm clay, becomes a golden-brown beige. I adore this little pot, which speaks to us like a knowing wink. It is a condensed, lively and inventive reinterpretation of an outdated typology.
