Formé dans son pays natal en Australie à l'University of South Australia, ce n'est pas un hasard si cet artiste étonnant offre un regard absolument inédit sur la pratique millénaire de la terre vernissée. Alors qu'il a mené une œuvre personnelle reflet d'une grande autonomie intellectuelle, il a étoffé son champ de recherche en œuvrant à des fouilles archéologiques diverses dans lesquelles son savoir-faire céramique pouvait offrir une aide précieuse. 

Lincoln Kirby-Bell présente lui même ainsi son travail: «I enjoy making work that is witty and fun and can be used every day, works that show individuality, the processes of their creation and hopefully reflect a sense of time and place.  The ceramics I make almost entirely revolve around the concept of 'vessels' or objects that can be used to eat and drink from or contain something» et il ajoute «My work is very decorative and distinctive due to the decorating techniques I employ, which give a raised textured surface to the decoration. The exuberant use of colours or bold black and white designs extensively covering the surfaces of my work, add to the overall effect. The aesthetic elements are as important to me as the functional considerations, the two coming together to create a uniquely individual object.»

Pour nous, son plat est une véritable surprise, car peu d'artistes sont capables de bousculer ainsi une pratique millénaire. Son sens de la composition, ses choix très tranchés et sa grande maîtrise technique en font un acteur important du renouveau tant attendu de la terre vernissée.
Ses pièces sont un support, un cadre à sa démesure, les textures cohabitent en une palette habile qui donne accès à un usage qui renouvelle profondément nos gestes et notre regard sur cette poterie de tradition imagière.
